James Rodriguez: Guatemala, Life After Genocide

James Rodrigues captures two men carrying a corpse in a coffin in Guatemala. The Guatemala Civil War left several citizens wounded or dead. The photographers choice of placing the men carrying the casket in the center of the frame draws the viewer in. They create a square shape with their bodies and the casket on top of their shoulders. This square stabilizes the piece. The casket is the brightest color in the photo, which creates contrast and adds to the importance of all the deaths from this war. The composition contains several lines that lead towards the direction the men are moving. This adds movement to the piece. The path they are walking on creates a linear track towards the left of the photo, which is the direction the men are moving. The roofs are all connected linearly to the the leftwards direction. The photo is at eye-level view which makes the viewer feel connected with the piece.
