I chose to look at W. Eugene Smith’s Tomoko Uemura in Her Bath. His work most definitely makes a social statement. The severe mercury poisoning in Japan was causing significant deformities and even killed. The government wasn’t doing anything to help the situation and so this photo was staged, as a statement that was part of a dramatic photo essay published in LIFE. Tomoko was poisoned while still in her mothers womb but still has visual differentiations.
