Floral Fusion is inspired Dutch still life paintings of the Baroque golden age with flowers photographed from all seasons. Colors evoke late summer and employ scale discontinuities for compositional effect. The explosion of color that dominates the composition is quieted by the reserved tones of the ground and border with their textural riffs of pebbles interrupted by spirals, and maidenhair fern interspersed with fallen blooms.
Pieces, Petals, Leaves and Eaves is a collection of wholecloth quilts designed from photographs of flowers and vernacular architecture in historical Pennsylvania neighborhoods, specifically Allentown, Bethlehem, Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Digitally printed on cotton, these images are constructed with three basic elements.
- A girih tiling background in which architecture and botanicals are sampled at various scales,
- Architectural elements selected out from photographic images based on object/subject features and composited into a new urban landscape, and
- A transitional layer with alpha blending between the girih “sky” on top and architectural montage on the bottom.
Barcelona Impressions continues my interest in Architectural photography and montage and adds embroidery to the quilted image.
