This is a photograph that represents a short depth of field. The couple is in focus, while the rest of the scenery behind them is blurred. The man on the left is looking towards the camera, while the girl on the right is looking to the left of the camera. They are interlocking arms and with their other arms they are each holding a hot dog. The way Diane Arbus shot this photo in short depth of field captures the couples presence and their natural facial expressions. The viewer gets to see the detail within the outfits the couple is wearing. The layering of jackets creates the assumption that they are in colder weather.
This is a photograph that represents a long depth of field. From the car in the foreground being in focus to the exhaust stacks on top of the building in the background being clear. The car is moving from the right to the left. The plant in the background has linear glass windows creating the outside wall. The choice of long depth of field makes the viewer see the detail within most of the scene. Robert Franks focus is obviously the plant, because of the title of the piece. It draws us in to see the details within the building, and on top. On the roof, you can notice a person standing by the darker gray exhaust stack. Faint power lines are apparent behind the plant.
Good choices – and good analysis of depth of field. Well done.
