Paul Strand, Depth of Field

Paul Strand: Woman and Boy, Tenancingo, MX. 1933

This photo by Paul Strand is an example of short depth of field. In this photo strand focuses the frame on a woman and what is likely her child. By adjusting the aperture, Strand was able to successfully blur the background and put close attention on the individuals. This, in addition to the light being shaded behind them by what is likely a balcony, seemingly separates the subjects from their background, without being disruptive.

In this photo we can see appropriate use of long depth of field. When Strand shot this photo he was likely using a high aperture because it is clear that the gateway, building and clouds are all in focus. Additionally, the light in this image is very unique. It is clear that strand intended to have the gate appear dark in order to divide up the rest of the image. This seemingly creates a frame for the building and clouds in the background.
