In 2016 artists named Schellekens and Peleman created a project called the inflatable refugee. The point of this project is to spread awareness of the European refugee crisis. The sculpture was on a boat that went from city to city gathering handwritten letters from refugees to be placed in random native citizen mailboxes. With the letter comes a postcard and a stamp which the receiver of the letter can use to return an answer to the author of the letter. The sculpture itself represents a refugee sitting tightly as possible to capture what is like being a refugee on a boat.
