This controversial photograph was taken by Andres Serrano in 1987. In this photograph, Serrano placed a small plastic crucifix in a container filled with his own urine. This image has two sides to the controversy. One side sees the image as disrespect toward their religion. It acts like a humiliation towards the son of God. He is being drowned in the artist’s urine. It could be seen as mocking Christians for their beliefs and religion. The other side sees this image as being powerful in a barbaric manner. Jonathan Jones’s article expresses the shock of the art. Jones states that “The passion of Christ has always been associated with bodily fluids” though it is usually blood. Serrano was said to have made a vivid intense baroque image of passion as the body of Christ is seen through a hazing yellow cloud. Jones believes it allows Christians to “meditate on the victory of the spirit in the humiliation of the flesh” which brings truth to the death of Jesus. They see it as an act of devotion and freedom in art.
