I genuinely was shocked reading about Serrano’s work. His decision to use his own pee in his artwork is absolutely as controversial as it is gross! “Unmissably outrageous” is how the Guardian described it. I find it really interesting how apparently the passion of christ is associated with typically blood but urine is another bodily fluid, so this image could actually have a serious tone. I really enjoy his take because regardless if he was intentionally offensive or just merely expressing himself, Serrano has caused a controversy that has brought about media attention and any publicity can be good publicity. We can see where those upset by this photo for religious purposes are absolutely able to be upset but also it is slightly brilliant in the attention it has caused. I think another aspect is that he could have chosen another liquid or even yellowed water as a substitute.
