The image pictured is of a photograph of a Christ on a cross submerged in urine. Andres Serrano, the creator of the work unsurprisingly received backlash from religious groups as they felt that the artist was deeply disrespecting the imagery and the significance behind it. However some argue that Serrano’s work is beautiful and merely causes offence on accident. The work can literally be compared to the bodily fluids and painful sores exhibited on wooden statues or sculptures of Christ in churches.
