My goal with this photo series was to show how the streets of Bethlehem look after being impacted by Covid. The streets were empty, and often the subject in Masked, & Isolated is seen to be the only pedestrian or person in the area. With Empty Streets it shows the once busy street corner nearly empty of pedestrians and cars.
Masked was meant to convey the feeling of solitude with the use of the sky as negative space and the leading lines in the bricks, leading up to the subject. The lines drag the eye up to the subject surrounded by one solid color so all focus is on her, allowing a viewer to feel how one might feel outside, isolated in a big open space.
Empty Streets, as apparent by the title, is meant to use it’s deep depth of field for the viewer of the work to see how the streets stretch back at this intersection, and follow the leading lines of the streets and slowly notice the lack of pedestrians and cars that used to litter this four way intersection. The use of the sky allows for a juxtaposition of emptiness to what should have been a full street.
Isolated is meant to convey both feelings of the other two pieces in the series, merged into one image. With the empty university street and a lone pedestrian, it still conveys a feeling of isolation in an open and outdoor area, while still bringing attention to the empty streets. The more shallow depth of field allows for a focal point on the subject, the blur allowing for a viewer to feel as though they are isolated along with the subject.
