A Chinese painter turned photographer, Wang Qingsong mimicked how China was during the Cultural revolution, when walls in Chinese cities were covered with posters made by rival Red Guard factions – in his piece Competition, Wang pasted more than 600 mock ad posters he drew by hand. At closer inspection of the work, Wang can be seen in the photograph, megaphone in hand.
Not much else is said on Wang, but it can be inferred he lived through the Cultural revolution as he drew from memories to create this piece.
