This is an effective portrait for many reasons. The tall, mother figure, is seen in white facing her attention to a room the viewer is unable to see. The young girl, Im assuming is her daughter, seems to be sitting straight up and looks very proper. She is wearing mostly all black which contrasts the woman to her right nicely. The contrast in colors also points out the very different stances the two hold; which was mentioned earlier. The background is very plain, but the archway frames the two people nicely and centers them in the image. The young girl has a very lackadaisical expression on her face whereas the mother appears to be in the middle of talking or seems intrigued by something in the room we can not see. This portrait affectively organizes each person within the image and highlights their differences.

Good analysis of contrasts in the image.
