In the short documentary “Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor: This is Not Photography” the two describe how their process of developing complex photographical images began and what methods they use to do so. Jerry Uelsmann uses multiple exposure effects as well as masking areas with lenses to create different shapes and then layering them on top of one another. His images were described to either be phenomenal or a lie in terms of photography. Jerry described this process and he uses the lens for all images and shapes captured, therefore, his use of objects and layering (plus drawing before hand) creates an interesting unrealistic visual that is done without photoshop. He was described as before his time as it looks like he uses photoshop but just uses layering and masking techniques to create these crazy looking images.
Maggie Taylor began her studies of photography at the University of Florida and shifted from traditional straight photography tp compiling a series of random objects together to create an interesting scene. As the internet has progressed, Maggie began layering individual photographs on photoshop and creating almost “collages”. Her work can be described as “heavy” and “dark” because of the creepy unrealisticness of her images.
Both individuals described themselves as having a heavy focus on images and objects.
