Mary Ellen Mark shot black and white photos at Oregon State Hospital in 1976 of patients at a ward. This picture emphasizes the stress and insanity of some of the patients. The photo captures a girl on a bed with her head in her chest and hands wrapped around the back of her neck. Her bed is a little bit messy as the sheets are out of place towards the top of the bed. The way the subject is holding herself portrays how alone she might be. Since she is in a mental hospital, it can be assumed that she might be going crazy which would support the way she is sitting. Her mind could be going several different directions, and this position might be the only way that she seems sane in her own mind.
