This is a montage by Ruth Throne-Thompson. It portrays a man with no feet levitating above the ground. The background almost looks like watercolor. It is dark at the bottom and is a gradient towards a light cream color at the top. The man’s shadow is visible directly below him, still with no feet. You cannot see any features to distinguish the person, making them look isolated and alone. The man is in the middle of the media, pulling the focus towards his darkness. This photograph was taken in 1983 during the time of staged photography. This photograph highlights the ideals of staged photography from its absurdist view.
This image will inspire my work by allowing me to see techniques that were used in Ruth Throne-Thompson’s montage. The gradient look is very interesting and could be something I am interested in working with in my work. I also like the way the shadow looks. This may be an aspect that I want to include in my work as well!
