Motion Photography

Luciana Abait, Untitled, (Step II), Argentine b. 1971.

The motion in this picture is captured from underwater in a pool. The surface of the water is moving and wavy. What is interesting about this is that the waves and ripples are frozen in time. This photo is crisp and has details that are rarely captured in water photography. The composition has many strong components such as light, emphasis, and shadow. The light in this photo is so unique as you can see how the light refracts through the water. The surface of the water is like a lens and viewers can see how the water bends the light into the pool. The emphasis in this photo comes mainly from the focus on the ladder in the pool. This is interesting because it brings a focus to the, at first, confusing photo. Lastly, shadow plays a big role in the composition of this photo because you can see the cast of light through the water and how the surface changes the shadows. The shadows also provide a unique contrast the the photo.
