I chose this photograph taken by Leonard Freed in 2002 called Man Sitting on Beach. I particularly liked this photo due to its composition and deeper meaning. We see a landscape of the beach in black and white with the foundation of sand in the foreground and the ocean/waves and sky in the background. At the center of the photograph, we see an older man sitting on the sand facing the ocean. He has sand all over his back and there seems to be a string from one ear to the other seen on the back of his head. I assume this is apart of his goggles or sunglasses that he may be wearing. We can also see that the man is wearing a black speedo and we can only visibly see the back of it. We can also see a small shadow of the man’s back on the sand. I really liked how simple the image was but also how peaceful it was. It is just an older man peacefully sitting in the sand enjoying the moment. I felt like this really captured the exhibition concept statement about “wellness” and the relationships between mind, body, and spirit. This image represents the topic of health and wellbeing in a very interesting way. The man is clearly taking some time for himself to reflect on his life but also to reflect and truly enjoy the view and the setting he is in. He seems to be really enjoying the moment and the beautiful environment around him. This is nothing but beneficial to the man’s wellbeing as he is doing something he enjoys in a setting that makes him content.
