This photograph is more than just a social statement. The photograph was taken by Eugine Smith in 1972 in Japan where there was a new disease going around. It started on the west coast and first affected fisherman. There lips and limbs would go from tingling to going numb. This disease was derived from severe mercury poisoning emitted from a chemical factory for 30 years prior to this photo. The disease claimed thousands of lives. This shot by Smith showed the world of the serious problem that was taking place in Japan. It not only showed us what was happening, but it also showed the severity of it and made a quick social statement.
