Depth of Field, Long and Short, Taohan

Depth of Field

Evans, Walker. American Photographs. New York: Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1938. no. 1.

Evans used long depth of field in this photograph. I assume he is trying to preserve all of the various “PHOTOS” characters, logos, and signs in that one single shot. This design gives the viewers of the image a clear message that this is a photo booth with powerful and creative advertisement that allow passengers to identify it from a far distance.

Arbus, Diane.
Veteran with a flag, N.Y.C.
. Artnet. Diane Arbus 1971–1956, 31 Oct. 2013 – 28 Dec. 2013, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco.

The photographer chose to use short depth of field as the person is the core of this image. The emotion and posture of this man in his veteran suit is amazingly highlighted. Behind him, there seems to be a parade in New York City as a parade vehicle can be vaguely seen on the left behind him and so do a women in same fashion of dressing who’s also holding an American flag in her hand. His facial impression, upset, confused, and lost, has created a contrast with the surroundings.
