Composition and Light, Emma

Eleanor

Harry Callahan- Eleanor (1951)

The composition of this piece by Callahan begins with the square of light in the middle of the piece. The square has a woman inside with her arms stretched to the walls of the shape. Her body, from head to toe, taking up the whole height of the box. The box is the brightest object in the photo, with the silhouette of the woman creating a contrast. The square and woman creates a focus for the photo. The square is surrounded by dark branches or roots, with light hitting them from above. The branches or roots create a linear pattern bringing the eye centrally to the focus of the piece, the woman. The highlights of the branches add to this focus. The lighting of the piece ultimately directs the viewer to the woman’s pose.
