long & short depth of field

Artist: Diane Arbus  Title: Woman with eyeliner, NYC, printed: 2003

In this picture get a clear example of short depth of field where all the focus is on this woman here we can see her facial expression, the wrinkles in her face and even the strands of hair on her but the background is very blurry which is hard to tell what is back there.

Artist: Diane Arbus  Title: An empty movie theater, N.Y.C., 1971

In this shot we get a clear example of long depth of field where everything in the photo is in focus from the back rows of the seats, to all the way to the screen in front of the movie theater. Here we can see what a movie theater looks like with no audience or no movie just the empty space.

  1. The theatre is not sharply focused like some of the other examples but there is a deeper depth of field than the portrait. Good analysis of short depth of field.
