Caleb, Composition and Light

Robert Frank, 1955

I think this picture is very full and has a lot of good details that make it impactful. Putting the photo in black and white further emphasizes the difference in skin tones. The colourless photo also encourages the viewer to search for detail and in doing so, the facial expressions of the people on the trolly is further emphasized. We can see the tired expression on the man second from the back, the naive look on the baby and the proud look on the kid. The angry scowl from the lady and the gentle smile from the man in the back. The photo does a good job tying all of these things together and creating a story between these strangers on a trolly.
