Edward Weston, 1930 Pepper No. 35 – The MET

I chose this black and white photograph by Edward Weston because I was immediately drawn to the organic shapes made by the highlights and the intense shadows of the pepper. The added depth and texture of the round bowl the pepper sits in adds to the focal point of the peppers shape and texture that is brought out by being in black and white. The intense light is coming from the top right corner of the piece, adding to the striking contrast of the shiny parts of the pepper to the deep intense shadows. The organic shapes are what bring the most intrigue to this image, in my opinion at least. If this image wasn’t in black and white I don’t think it would be as interesting to look at as it is. Deciphering the different textures brings the pepper more to life than expected.
