Composition and Lighting: Drive-in Movie

Robert Frank, Drive-in movie, The Americans. Detroit 1955.

I choose this particular image because of the unique presentation of the sky. Drive in movie theaters use projectors to play the movie, as a result of this, they are unable to play movies in broad daylight. This causes me to hypothesize that this photo was taken just after sunset with a long exposure (noticeable by the slight blur in the figures. Additionally, this picture is particularly interesting because the blown out sky draws the focus to the darker more detailed areas of the photo. It’s almost like the colors have been inverted on a photo that was framed by a black sky.
