Composition and Content: James Rodriguez

James Rodriguez documents the lives of the citizens in Guatemala after the civil war (1960-1996) in his collection, Guatemala, Life After Genocide. According to the descriptions that explain Rodriguez’s collection, thousands went missing during those horrific times of the genocide. After many years have passed, due to new forensics technology, some families were able to collect the remains of their loved ones who disappeared and received some closure.

In this image, two men are carrying a casket on their way to bury a loved one. Near the two men is a dog, and behind the men are two houses. The faces of the men are not shown which seems interesting to me because the photo really focuses on the casket. The casket itself is more vibrant compared to its surroundings and the photo is shot at a short depth of field, focusing on the casket while everything else is in the background. I really like the detail of the dog in this photo because the dog looks emaciated, probably due to hunger. I think the emaciated dog really symbolizes the struggles and bleakness that the family of the deceased have suffered through.
