Composition and Content

Mitra Tabizian, Tehran 2006, 2006, gift of the Buddy Taub Foundation, Jill and Dennis A. Roach, Directors, through the 2014 Collectors Committee, © Mitra Tabrizian, courtesy Leila Heller Gallery, New York, photo © 2014 Museum Associates, LACMA

This photograph represents strong composition because it is a very wide frame that encompasses a wide setting of people walking. This composition is so important to the image because it allows for the photograph to be symbolic and symmetrical in a panoramic view. There is clear juxtaposition between the contents in the photograph. It looks as if there are 3 different settings within one going from left to right. The buildings and billboard of city life contrasted with the directionless people in the foreground show the combination of different backgrounds. There is a lack of direction for the people in the photograph which makes it seem like they are all separate people going separate places, yet they are within the same frame. Tabrizian is best known for her photographs that combine the elements of both “western” and Iranian which is seen in this image through its wide frame and composition. Tabrizian addressed the social issues of exile and alienation through her work, specifically in this photograph. She wanted to show the emotions of each individual pictured in the wide frame to represent the relationship between film and photography. The billboard in the background depicts Iran’s revolutionary leaders which represent order and power in the country. This is juxtaposed with the chaotic movement of the people and their lack of direction in the frame which represents lack of order and power. She is commenting on the way in which the people of Iran are treated by the government.
