Social Justice

Lynsey Addario is a Photojournalist who travels around the world to photograph modern day issues such as Maternal Mortality, Refugees, etc. Her photos on ‘The Displaced’ especially stuck out to me because her purpose was to photograph children who had been displaced by war, and fulfilled her goal by not only capturing the lives of the children but also gave us a closer into the minds of the displaced.

For example, this girl is pictured in a place where she was relocated to with her mother. By the looks of it, she understands what has happened and isn’t emotionally about it externally, but something about the way Addario took this photo makes us viewers more inclined to feel what the child is feeling. What’s on her mind, while her mother is coming out of the other room after just finishing her prayer? “Why has it come to this?” she might think to herself. We find ourselves utilizing the effectiveness of the photo by questioning the feelings of the little girl. Also pictured is a stone bench, a small table. and a cold concrete floor. We notice that this living circumstance is not ideal for the, and we allow that to come into play when thinking about what could be going on in this girls head.
