Social Justice Photography

New York City, 2020

Steve John Irby is a New York city native and his creative vision relies on “representing one’s worldview without inhibition.” This image was captured during George Flyod, Black Lives Matter protests in New York. The image shot in black and white positions the police car as the subject of the photograph. It’s being vandalized with graffiti and the liquids that are flooding the interior. The image successfully communicates the message that the public is infuriated with police not only because the focus is on the vandalism of a cop car but the crowd of protesters in the foreground of the image collectively participating in trashing the vehicle.

  1. It is interesting that you focused on the vandalism more than the social justice statements being made further down on the site. Steve John Irby is a street photographer so he captures everything as you note, “without inhibition.”
