I think the controversy here speaks for itself. Serrano distorted a religious figure into what appears to be a darker essence. I believe the original intent was to create a visually compelling image regardless of the color choice. However, I understand how to someone who is very religious this could be seen as inauthentic and offensive to their religion.
This was part of his immersion series – photographs of sculptures immersed in fluids – this one immersed in water that followed a white Christ and a black Christ.
