Controversy, Izy

Controversy

Piss Christ – Andres Serrano Photograph 1987

The photo shows a depiction of Jesus on the cross, said to have been made with the artists own urine. This piece was meant to bring shock value which can be seen in the controversy, however, the artist could argue that there was some other intentions with this piece as well. The general purpose of the photograph was to bring irony to the religion because much of what is taught in the catholic religion is based around the blood and flesh of Christ, the artist wanted to use this art to show the obsession with the bodily fluids and flesh of Christ by making a piece called ‘Piss Christ’. As is to be expected, those devout to the religion see it as blatant disrespect to the religion. By making a piece of art on the Jesus and calling it Piss Christ with you own urine, can be seen as a disrespectful to the people that practice that religion.
