Andres Serrano, Piss Christ 1987

The photo shows a depiction of Jesus on the cross. The artist is said to have made it with his own urine, but the general purpose was to bring irony to the religion. The artist did this piece for some shock value, however, the artist could argue that there was some other intentions with this piece as well. Much of what is taught in the catholic religion is based around the blood and flesh of Christ, the artist wanted to use this art as a sort of irony to the obsession with the bodily fluids and flesh of Christ by making a piece called ‘Piss Christ’. On the other side of the argument, it is seen as a blatant disrespect to piss or spit on someone or some thing, so by making a piece of art on the ‘son of God’ and calling it ‘Piss Christ’ and saying you made it with you own urine, could definitely be seen as a disrespect to the people of that religion and of ‘God’.
