Capa, Salgado, Zoe

Contributions to Documentary Photography

SebastiĆ£o Salgado is a photographer who traveled the world documenting the “poor and powerless”. This specific image is of coal miners in India. This close up, very personal, image gives the viewer a look into their environment and physical condition. It is apparent this man and individuals behind them are wearing dirty cloth and have a concerned look on their faces. They also appear tired as the bags under their eyes are almost highlighted. By capturing these small details it lets the viewer into the situation within the photograph.

Robert Capa was a photographer who is known for photographing wars. His unique diversity of several cultures makes him well known in capturing historical wars. In this image, specifically, Chinese women are shown looking up to the sky proudly as they are preparing to become nationalist Chinese soldiers. The sun is above them and highlighting their proud looking faces. Their arms are also all in the same position. This image aids to capture the fact that these were brave women preparing to become a part of war that was originally just a man’s custom.
