Capa, Greg, Salgado

Documentary Photography

SebastiĆ£o Salgado, Serra Pelada, Brazil.

The first image I choose was a part of Salgado’s Serra Pelada collection. This image depicts miners gathered amongst the rocks performing work. This photo and many of the others shot by Salgado tell an uncommonly told story of the harsh conditions many individuals live in to this day. Salgado is still a documentary photographer and continues to shoot photos like the one featured above to show the reality of the world we live in.

Robert Capa. CHINA. 1938. Hankow. Young women being trained as Nationalist Chinese soldiers.

The second image I choose is part of Robert Capa’s b. Budapest 1913 – d. Indochina collection. The image features several dozen young women being trained as nationalist Chinese soldiers in 1938. During this time china was occupied bu the comunist regime and as a result many individual liberties were taken away. This image spoke to me because it is very difficult to tell who these individuals are. I think as a result, it show how much personal freedom was removed. In addition to this photograph, Robert Capa has captured a vast amount of influential documentary photographs largely including war time photography with close up shots.

  1. Good examples. Be sure to proofread for typos. A few minor changes will improve these paragraphs. Also, remember to make the photographs linkable to the Media files.
