Learning to Salute, Arthur Rothstein, American, 1915-1985
This photo is a black and white photo. The artist Rothstein framed this photo with the square made by soldiers. The camera view is downward and from a distance to make the soldiers looks bigger in the front but smaller in the back. Base on the title of the photo, we know that they are learning to salute. They all dressed the same, standing with hand up. At a glance, we cant identify who is who, they are look the same. I think the photographer is trying to express that soldiers lost individuality when they are soldiers.
