Portraits

[Portrait of Baron de Meyer at Newport, Rhode Island] 1903 – Gertrude Käsebier (American, 1852 – 1934)

I chose this portrait because I think it’s successful in composition, with a focal on the face, the rest of the portrait allows the viewer to follow the subjects position and see the entire image. The cropping on this portrait is also intriguing to me and most of the reason I chose it. At first I thought the image ended at the tree, but it was upon looking directly at it more that I noticed the negative space between the edge and the tree and I found it interesting and successful.
