Motion of Light in Water, Rachael

UPDATED Motion of Light in Water

This is a photograph by Kristin Capp taken in Niteroi Brazil in 2005. It does not have a title and goes by “Niteroi Brazil, 2005.” This is a very dynamic photograph, as shown by the waves. The waves are frozen in time. They have a soft-focused look compared to the ship and the mountains. This photograph was taken from the angle of the waves, showing the multitude and magnitude of the waves. In the distance is a mountain that looks like it is barging out of the sea. On the top, there is part of a ship. The ship is large, overhanging the photographer. The angle of this image creates a proportional illusion, making the boat, mountain, and waves all look very large. The light comes from the right, creating deep shadows in the waves. The mountains in the distance are foggy and contrasted by a harsh black line between the water and the land. This image has a diverse tonal range, ranging from very dark darks to very light lights. The black and white focus of the image brings a dark and powerful edge to the photograph.
