Miniaturized Photography

This Photo by Hamish Grant is an excellent example of how miniaturized photography can be effective in light of adding a realistic look. With a low f number and a high aperture, Hamish accomplished his goal of having a small depth of field, in addition to having perfect lighting for the set-up to seem as realistic as it can. One may look at this image without any background knowledge and assume that it is a typical moment captured at a real construction. Having done this project in the past, I think being able to have the right props and environment to shoot miniaturized photography can amplify the effect of making a model seem realistic. Hamish’s technique involves focusing on the construction vehicle and getting really close to the subject, while having similar structures around it remain in focus.

  1. URL for the example? This was supposed to be tilt shift. But your description implies the opposite – a miniature made to look real. TS or fake TS makes real full-size objects look like miniatures.
