Motion

Malecon, Habana, Cuba

Peter Turnley American b. 1955

In the provided photograph, you can see kids playing in a sprayed wave of sea water. This takes place in Havana Cuba on a street that parallels the shoreline. You can see that motion is captured due to the water that is scattered throughout the air. The water is crisp and easy to see, almost frozen in the air. There is some motion blur that would support the notion that the water is in motion, but overall the image was captured very well by having a frozen shot of the thrown water. Lighting plays a beautiful part in this image as the sunset glistens through the spray of salt water, giving a glow to the scene. You can see a golden glimmer in the puddles on the floor that have been projected from the sun and through the water molecules that are in the air.

  1. Good description of motion and light. The seawall forms a diagonal in the composition as it recedes from the viewer. All of the children are in motion, playing in the water. This contributes more diagonal movement to the composition.
