Turnley: “Amputee”

Peter Turnley, American, b. 1955. Amputee, Victim of Landmine, Kabul, Afghanistan. 1989. Artstor, library.artstor.org/asset/24691990

The exhibition is highlighting work that promotes wellness. This piece in particular shows a man adapting to change since he now is an amputee. The man is on crutches and attempting to kick a soccer ball. It is clear he is trying to do things that he might have done before, when he had his full leg. Playing soccer might have been an enjoyable thing for him to do. He is changing in order to get use to his new leg and its capabilities. This piece clearly shows the promotion of wellness as its relationship between this man’s mind and body is trying to reconnect again.

  1. It’s interesting that in a time when we’ve all been required to adapt to restrictions due to Covid, that you’ve selected an image about adaptation to highlight for wellness. Good description.
