Danny Lyon, Prisoners Raking in Single Line, 1968

Danny Lyon’s photograph, prisoners raking in single line, displays 13 individuals who are prisoners raking in a uniform manner. This photograph really spoke to me because I think it demonstrates the civil rights issues in a manner that points out the issues with mass incarceration. The photograph, despite being taken in the late 60s is extremely reminiscent of slavery. I think that this is important because after slavery was over, racist individuals often arrested people of color without justification to obtain free labor. This photograph does a good job in pointing out the flaws in the system.
