Mary Ellen photographed a collection of images with the intention of giving outsiders a view into the lives of the individuals living in Ward 81 at Oregan State Hospital. This image caught my attention because of the feeling of helplessness and loneliness it evokes. The woman pictured is taking a shower while squatting and leaning forward, suggesting that she is experiencing sadness or distress. This emotion is furthered by the lighting in the image which gets darker around the edges, framing her in a surrounding of darkness.
